Contemporary Collection

The artwork in the Contemporary Collection began roughly in the 1940's and 1950's.  This coincides with the trend of home artists beginning to revive the tradition of decorating functional objects for the home.  As more people became interested in this trend, some people became teachers, sharing their knowledge of history and techiniques with others.

Some pioneers of contemporary American decorative painting are highlighted in the Fathers of American Decorative Painting Exhibit.  From these beginnings artists developed their own styles and techniques.  As their students practiced and became proficient they too shared their knowledge, and so the art from grew and spread.

All styles, techniques and mediums are represented in the Contemporary Collection.  The variety of imagery and surfaces is breathtaking.
